The Flowered Handbag is the author's attempt at creating a story of childhood which does not quite succeed as a result of lack of cohesive central storyline on which to anchor the series of events in the book.
As the purported thrust of events in the book, one would have expected more uniting results to emerge from the Heroine's trip to London. But in this respect, the reader is sorely disappointed.
One therefore wonders at the implication of the endless tales of shopping that the heroine embarks upon.
